Surrealism

Porcelain Basin at a glance

Stepping into Yellowstone National Park is like stepping into another world.  Fire and Ice, they called it.  True enough, when you step into its borders, there is a fine line between the two.  Everywhere you turn, you see smoke rising from the ground, from springs, and from rivers.  You hear gurgles and fizzes and silence.

On a geographical note, the Yellowstone Caldera is the largest volcanic system in North America and is often termed “super volcano.”   In fact, the Yellowstone Caldera resulted in a huge eruption 640,000 years ago.

On one of our hikes, we went to the Norris Geyser Basin where it is the hottest geyser basin in Yellowstone.  We stopped by Porcelain Basin, a desolate area where hardly any vegetation grows due to the hot, acidic water emitted from numerous thermal features in the basin.  Boardwalks crisscross the whole basin which makes it easier for tourists to explore and take in the whole scenery.
