Mono Lake

Mono Lake is an alkaline and hypersaline lake in Mono County, California. It is believed to have formed at least 760,000 years ago making it among the oldest lakes in North America. The lake contains approximately 280 million tons of dissolved salts, with the salinity varying depending upon the amount of water in the lake at any given time.

Ever wonder what these “spire-like” things sticking out of the lake are? They are called tufa. Tufa is a soft, friable and porous calcite rock formed by calcium carbonate (CaCO3) deposits.

On one of the trails that we took at the Mono Lake South Tufa area, I read that if you taste the lake water it would taste salty and bitter at the same time. This is due to the alakalinity of the lake. I tasted the lake water (for the heck of it LOL) and it tasted a bit bitter but not so salty to me.

At the visitor’s center, you can see a close view of the two large islands, Negit Island (black island) and Puoha Island (white island). I’m not sure if I got photos of both islands, though.
I made a slideshow of my Mono Lake photos. You could also go and check out my flickr photostream.
Interesting fact: Glam metal band Cinderella filmed the music video of their power ballad “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)” (video on youtube) at Mono Lake South Tufa area. If you notice near the end of the video, there are also scenes shot at the Bodie Ghost Town (I will show my photos later) teeeheee. Hubby would really love this little tidbit. I remember him telling me that despite being a metal band, they have a “girlie” sounding band name. LOL
